About Ole Dog New Tech

Ole Dog New Tech: How it Started

Every time I came home to visit my parents, the same thing would happen. After driving for 4+ hours, I'd walk through the door, be greeted with a hug and a "how was your drive?", and then, without fail, my mom and dad would be ready and waiting with several "how-do-I?" tech-related questions. My aunt, who is 83, and lives next door would pull out an actual handwritten list she'd been saving up since the last time she saw me. My older cousin, just up the lane, would have questions too. And I'd sit down with each of them, one by one, and we'd work through it together.

I never minded. Honestly, I enjoyed it.

One day my uncle, watching me help my aunt with her phone, said, "You should just write a book so everyone our age can get these answers." That comment stuck with me.

That's where Ole Dog New Tech was born.

The people I was helping weren't struggling because they weren't smart. They were struggling because nobody had ever explained this stuff in a way that made sense to them. And a lot of them felt embarrassed to ask, like they were bothering someone, or like they should already know.

That bothered me.

So I built this site to be the place where those questions are always welcome. No eye rolls. No jargon. No making anyone feel silly for asking. Just clear, patient, step by step answers from someone who genuinely enjoys helping. Think of it as having an online tech savvy nephew who'll build easy to follow guides for the questions you were always too afraid to ask.

A Little About Me

David, founder of Ole Dog New Tech

My name is David. I'm from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

My day job is in the healthcare technology industry, working with complex medical devices and systems. A big part of that role is bridging the gap between the technical side of things and the clinicians who use them. Ole Dog New Tech is exactly that, just for a different audience.

I've always believed that no technology is too complicated to explain clearly. You just need someone patient enough to break it down the right way. That's what I try to do here, every single post.

Outside of work I try to stay active with the gym and sports. I love to travel when I can, and when I'm home in Cape Breton, there's nothing better than time with family and friends. I love solving problems. I enjoy breaking things down into simple steps that anyone can follow and understand. Building this website has become a passion project that ties it all together.

Why "Ole Dog New Tech"?

You know the saying, you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I disagree. I've watched my 83 year old aunt learn how to video call her grandchildren. I've watched my parents figure out things on their phones they never thought they could do. Every single time, the look on their faces when something finally clicks is worth every minute.

Old dogs can absolutely learn new tricks. They just need someone patient enough to show them.

That's what this site is for. Because my uncle was right, there was a book to be written. And this is it, one guide at a time.

For every aunt, parent, grandparent, and neighbour who's ever felt left behind by technology. You're not alone. And you're always welcome here.
